Ride of the Month: Schultz, Sunset, Upper Brookbank, Little Gnarly, Schultz

 This is a Flagstaff Classic!

This ride incorporates some of the best sections of the Mt. Elden/ Dry Lake Hills trail system with dark forests, views of the San Francisco Peaks, steep climbs and technical descents. Our best reference for a map of this ride is the Emmitt Barks Cartography Flagstaff Trails Map, available here at Absolute Bikes. (If you remind us when you are picking up a copy, we’ll try to draw in some of the recent AZ Trail, Ft. Valley and Flagstaff Loop Trail additions as well.)

Stay tuned for more info on the Flagstaff Ranger District’s soon to be issued Proposed Action for recreation planning in the Mount Elden and Dry Lake Hills area. If everything goes the way we think it is, we should be getting some great new trails and re-alignments in the next few years!

Propaganda: End of an Era

We’re gonna go out on a limb here a little.

We understand that not all of our customers are fans of the fact that some trails are open to motorized use, and we respect that view. If you are not aware, the Coconino National Forest just implemented its new motorized travel restrictions as part of its implementation of the National Travel Management Rule. Local details here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/news-events/?cid=STELPRDB5362842

The basic idea is that all Forests throughout the country must restrict motor vehicle travel to designated routes and areas; this had never been required in the past. Anyone could drive anywhere not restricted for any specific reason, (a Wilderness designation for example). We strongly support the need to appropriately restrict travel to protect Forest resources.

This new Rule doesn’t only affect OHVs; this will affect where everyone can camp, what roads are legal to drive on and much more. Even if you have no interest in riding quads or dirt bikes or driving jeeps, you will probably be impacted in some way in your ability to access your favorite campsite, climbing area or vista.

We want to give a shout out in solidarity to some of the folks who first pioneered some of our favorite singletrack and who continue to help build and maintain and advocate for more routes…the local single track motorcyclists. Thanks guys, and we support your ongoing efforts to get some legal routes.

To those who don’t like motorized trail based recreation, please keep a few thoughts in mind. Managed recreation has far fewer negative impacts than unmanaged recreation. Our National Forests are managed with a multiple use ethic. We in no way think motorcycles ought to be on all single tracks…we don’t even really think bicycles ought to be allowed on ALL trails, (although it would be sweet if a few of those trails in the Wilderness were open to bicycles…;-}), but we do think that responsible trail users of all types should have legitimate opportunities to recreate in our National Forests.

So once again, thanks for the trails friendly motorcycle guys, and we’re rooting for you!

Details on one new motorized multiple use trail system currently under review can be found here: http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/nepa_project_exp.php?project=36911
