Ride of the Month: Hart Trail

Hart Trail is a steep, gnarly, exposed descent, (climb?), that connects the bottom of the Sunset Catwalk to the Little Elden near Sandy Seep Trail. We recommend this route only for experienced mountain bikers seeking a significant challenge and who aren’t afraid to walk a section or two.

As noted above, you’ll need to make a loop with Little Elden Trail and Sunset. For a longer ride, consider connecting these two trails the other way using Christmas Tree Trail, Forces of Nature, Pipeline, Lower Oldham and Elden Lookout Road.

There is a planning effort under way by the Flagstaff Ranger District to potentially realign Hart Trail and part of Little Elden Trail to be a bit more sustainable and usable. Stay tuned for detail on this. In the meantime, get out and ride this rugged trail!

Propaganda: Be prepared for some of the best riding of the year!

The rain brought by the annual monsoon really helps to harden up trail surfaces in northern Arizona. These conditions are colloquially know and the “brown powder” in homage to skiing’s “powder days”. It is important to be prepared and plan your rides accordingly to take advantage of the awesome trail conditions.

  • Bring a rain jacket! Even if the skies are clear when you leave the house, conditions can change suddenly. Even though this might only mean that you get a little wet on your way home, changing weather can often drop the air temperature 20 to 30 degrees fahrenheit. Couple temps in the 50s with soaking wet clothing and you can become hypothermic very quickly. A rain shell can help keep a little discomfort from becoming a life threatening condition.
  • Plan to ride in the morning. Typically, (although not always), monsoon storms build throughout the mid-day and rain begins in the late morning or early afternoon. If you get out early you’ll usually be able to take advantage of the tacky trail conditions and stay dry as well.
  • Don’t ride muddy trails! Usually our trails dry out pretty quickly, but some trails hold water and if we have had a large amount of precipitation, even our more porous routes can get sloppy. Please refrain from messing up the tread by avoiding muddy trails.
  • Get indoors if there is significant lightning! Rolling thunder in the distance is usually nothing to worry about, but if a big storm cell is coming in and lightning is accompanied a very short time later by a thunder clap, get to safety as quickly as possible. Although lightning injuries are relatively rare, lightning is a very real concern for those who spend a lot of time outside.

As always, thank you sincerely for your business and support!
