Ride of the Month: End of the World

This is a great gravel road ride out to the edge of the Mogollon Rim. It is a long ride, so bring lots of food and water. The big payout is a phenomenal view overlooking Oak Creek Canyon and the Sedona area.

The round trip from Absolute Bikes, Flagstaff, is approximately 61 miles. Route finding is easy.

From town, ride out Route 66 West to Woody Mountain Road. Although Woody Mountain Road has lots of traffic at first, this thins out past the Arboretum pretty substantially.

Woody Mountain Road is also FR 231. You will be following this road until it ends. You’ll be crossing the headwaters for several canyons that feed West Fork of Oak Creek. You’ll wind up at the East Pocket Lookout Tower, and the top of the AB Young Trail that climbs out of Oak Creek Canyon from Highway 89. (This trail is not open to bikes!)

Pack a lunch, bring your friends, and make a day of it!

Propaganda: National Trails Day! Help connect a new piece of the Flagstaff trail system!

Absolute Bikes has been the ongoing sponsor for Flagstaff Biking Organization’s Flagstaff area National Trails Day involvement, and other FBO Trail Days, for years. Our $250 per-event sponsorship pays for a Flag Live ad, fliers, some of FBO’s web site fees, and miscellaneous other expenses that are incurred getting an event like this set up.

More than that, we have been big supporters of this, and other trail work in Flagstaff and Sedona, in other ways for decades. Ken Lane, the owner of Absolute Bikes, can be seen swinging a McCleod or pick-mattock at most FBO Trail Days. Jared, the manager of our Sedona shop, delivers pizzas that we have purchased to trail workers on the Red Rock Ranger District’s trail work events in Sedona. Anthony, our general manager, helps to run the FBO trail program and can be seen leaning on a Pulaski at many trail events. ;-P

We also incentivize our Team Absolute Bikes and Red Rock Racing Team members to get out and assist on trail work events with store credit, discounts and other deals in exchange for a certain level of participation.

We want to invite you to come out this Saturday, or to any one of the many other trail work events in the area and work with us. “Work” may be an appropriate word, technically, but these events are really fun and very rewarding! If you’ve never helped to build or maintain trails before, you will never see them the same way again. You will always remember the spots where you have worked when you are riding over them. You will certainly gain a whole new level of respect for the great resource that public trails are to all of us.

If you have worked on trails before, THANK YOU! The folks in our community who spend their free time contributing have our highest respect! Come on out so that we can give you the high-five you so righteously deserve!
