Ride of the Month: Rocky Ridge, Pipeline, Forces of Nature, Christmas Tree, Sandy Seep
Since much of the higher elevation and north facing trails in Flagstaff are still a bit snowy and/or muddy, these route provide some options for riding in the meantime.
We recommend connecting Rocky Ridge, Pipeline, Forces of Nature, Christmas Tree and Sandy Seep as an out-and-back from either end as one option. Additionally, a longish loop can be made using the Arizona Trail/ Flagstaff Loop Trail under Highway 89A, across the Picture Canyon property and under I-40 to Campbell Mesa. From there, you can find your way back home on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, or make an even longer loop by following the Flagstaff Loop Trail along the southern end of Flagstaff towards JWP Boulevard.
Rocky Ridge, sections of Pipeline and Forces of Nature all offer some great “old-school” technical trails to challenge your skills. Most of the rest of any of the above listed options are beginner to intermediate level mountain bike trails with few extended climbs or descents.
For more detail, check out Emmitt Barks Cartography’s Flagstaff Trails Map. Stop by either store and we can get you set up with this map and some other advice.
Propaganda: Filling in the holes
Already we are learning that changes made by the new Presidential Administration may affect the availability of trail crew staff for the local Forest Service Districts.
Without any commentary on the political nature of these changes, we’d like to suggest that we can all make sure our trails stay maintained and fun to ride regardless of changes far away in Washington, DC.
Ultimately public lands belong to all of us. We have miles of trails in the Flagstaff and Sedona area that are our trails! At different times the Forest Service, (and others), have had more and less funding available to build and maintain trail on our Federal public lands.
Given that the trend has been towards less funding for trail crews, it is more important than ever that we all get out and volunteer to keep up the trails. Flagstaff Biking Organization is hosting 8 Trail Days and 5 additional Trail Fairies events maintaining trails this year. The Red Rock District is also hosting numerous volunteer trail events. (Email or call Bret for details. email@example.com or 928-203-7509 )
Trail work events are a great time, volunteers can work as much or little as they want. Often there is free lunch too! We guarantee that you’ll never see trails the same way after attending a well-run trail event. You’ll have a new appreciation for the trails every time you ride!
Who cares what happens in DC? We got this…
