Ride of the Month: Bill Williams, Bixler Saddle Epic Loop- Revisited

We posted this one a few years ago, but in the wake of the as of now still burning Museum Fire, we thought it would be good to recommend a ride where folks can get out of the smoke and clear their heads a bit. This is an epic, old-school mountain bike loop that requires a bunch of endurance and a strong sense of adventure! You might get lost, you’ll certainly push your bike a bit, but the scale and scope of this ride is worth the effort.

Travel out of Williams on Perkinsville Road for a few miles to the Benham Trail Head on your right. This is your start/finish.

Climb Benham Trail nearly to the top of Bill Williams Mountain. You may opt out to the road for the last couple of switch backs as the trail becomes un-climbably steep towards the top.

Just before the final climb up the road to the lookout tower on Bill Williams Mountain, Bill Williams Trail descends to your left. Ride down this trail. After about a half a mile, you’ll see where Bixler Saddle comes in from your left; you’ll be returning to Bill Williams Trail here later.

After a long and challenging descent, you’ll follow the signs to the Ranger Station. From the Ranger Station, ride the road out to the I-40 West on ramp. Ride I-40 to the west to Devil Dog Road exit. (This is a legal and quick ride on the interstate…)

Ride under I-40 to a “T” intersection and turn left. After this gravel road bears to the right, you’ll be looking for Bixler Saddle road on your left. After a long haul up the road, you’ll reach Bixler Saddle, where Bixler Saddle Trail climbs to your left. The real climbing begins here.

You’ll pass some scenic rock formations and stellar views as you ascend back to Bill Williams trail. Turn right to return as you came up Bill Williams Trail and back down Benham Trail.

Bring a good map, lots of water, and snacks! Have fun! (Check the Trail Forks app…)

(There are ways to shorten this ride, as an out and back up Benham or Bill Williams Trail, or just up and over Benham to Bill Williams and back on the road to the Benham Trail Head.)

Propaganda: Only you can help fix the trails!

Unless you are planning on moving away from Flagstaff, more than ever you’ll need to help get the trails back in shape on Mount Elden!

We at Absolute Bikes have been heavily engaged in trails advocacy and putting our shovels where are mouths are for years. We see so many our customers and friends out working on trails with us and the Forest Service on a regular basis, and we are always overwhelmed by the community engagement on our trails!

Although the details are still to be revealed, there is no way that this fire has not had a substantial impact on some of our favorite trails. System trails like Sunset, Brookbank, and Oldham, have certainly had sections burn that will lead to significant erosion once we start getting some real monsoon rains.

Non-system trails, like Red Onion, Wasabi, and Ginger, have also been similarly impacted. This drives home a point that we have been trying to make for years. In light of a catastrophic event, these trails have no protection or way for us to help put them back legally. We, and others, have been advocating for inclusion of some of these, and otherwise providing for the unmet needs as expressed by these trails. Hopefully the Mount Elden Dry Lake Hills Recreation Planning effort will still proceed as planned, (pending better understanding of the severity of this fire’s impacts), and we’ll have an opportunity to participate in planning that can add some much needed trails to our system that address users needs and can be legally maintained and repaired in the future.

All of that said, we are all going to need to double down on showing up to help build and maintain to get our trails back on track! (Pun intended, sorry…) Please check the Flagstaff Biking Organization calendar, (there’s an event tomorrow!), https://flagstaffbiking.org/mountain/trail-program/trail-schedule/, the Arizona Trail Association trail work events, http://volunteer.aztrail.org/need/, and the Flagstaff Ranger District schedule, https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd583697.pdf for upcoming opportunities to work on trails. Also, follow the Flagstaff Trail Faeries on Facebook for some other opportunities to do some spot-maintenance, https://www.facebook.com/Flagstaff-Trail-Faeries-536823786673254/ . We are sure next year’s calendars will be Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills oriented!

Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you on the trails, whether riding or digging!
