Ride of the Month: Transept is official!

It’s been several years since the Transept, a user-created route off of Highline Trail, was closed as part of a management effort by the Forest Service. The trail has undergone the requisite National Environmental Policy Act analyses and with some minor reroutes has been added to the formal Forest Service trail system!

From Absolute Bikes, Sedona, head out on Slim Shady trail. At the summit on Slim Shady, near the open slick rock area on your right, turn left onto Highline Trail. After you begin to descend from the summit on Highline, you’ll turn left onto Transept in the second switchback. Transept contours around the rocks and eventually descends to Verde Valley School Road. This trail is a bit less technical than Highline’s descent, but still fun and challenging.

From Verde Valley School Road, turn right on the pavement. Turn right on Baldwin trail after VVSR turns to dirt. From here you can loop back to the shop on Baldwin and Templeton/Slim Shady/ or your route of choice.

Check out Trailforks and Emmitt Barks Cartography’s maps for details, you may need to fill in the blank on Transept, but these resources will help you get the big picture sorted.

Propaganda: The Fort Tuthill Bike Park is mostly built and we are proud to have helped make it happen!

If you have been following along on Flagstaff Biking Organization’s or the Fort Tuthill Bike Park’s social media, you know that some substantial additions have been made to and opened at the Fort Tuthill Bike Park.

We have been involved in getting this park built from the earliest days.

Two of our former employees, Linden and Erik, helped to produce and present the concept of “Gravity Fed Mountain Biking” to the US Forest Service, Coconino County Parks and Recreation, and the City of Flagstaff, back in 2010. This opened discussions with these governments about potential ways to address and provide for this type of riding. Our current inventory manager, Lucas, our service manager, Kyle, and mechanics Sam and Vince, have been volunteering to help keep the park maintained.

Team Absolute Bikes members have been instrumental in showing that mountain bikers are key partners in building and maintaining trails of all types by being a consistent presence at Flagstaff Biking Organization Trail Days and other trail events. This presence and willingness greases the skids on any progress for mountain bike trails and the bike park.

Our general manager, Anthony, has lead the charge on the Fort Tuthill Bike Park, and many other trails projects, as a volunteer with Flagstaff Biking Organization. He has applied for and administered several grants, donations and discounts and coordinated the partnerships with the County and American Conservation Experience to actually get the park built.

In addition to this direct work by our folks, Absolute Bikes has  raised and donated almost $8000 in funds through the Flagstaff Enduro proceeds that have been directly donated to the Flagstaff Biking Organization Fort Tuthill Bike Park Fund.

The Fort Tuthill Bike Park project has been supported by so many people and businesses throughout the Flagstaff community, and we are proud to count ourselves among them!
