Ride of the Month: Big Park Loops and Pine Valley Ridge/Hot Loop/Woods Canyon

As part of the Red Rock Ranger District’s new Adopt-A-Trail Program, Steve McClain, manager of Absolute Bikes Sedona, has taken on the monitoring and light maintenance on the Big Park Loop Trails in the Village of Oak Creek. Thanks to Steve for his extra efforts towards making trails better for everyone!

These are great beginner to intermediate mountain bike trails with all of the phenomenal views we expect when riding in the red rocks of the Verde Valley.

We highly recommend these trails for folks new to mountain biking.

For more experienced riders, we recommend using the Big Park Loops trails to access Pine Valley Ridge, the Hot Loop and Woods Canyon trails to the east and south. This ride can be technically challenging and in its own way a bit remote. You’ll need to pedal a little pavement on Highway 179 to get back to the Village of Oak Creek from the Woods Canyon Trail head near the Red Rock Ranger station.

Be careful and observe the signs that prohibit bicycles from entering the Wilderness area adjacent to this part of the trail system.

Hot Loop map: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recreation/recarea/?recid=54992&actid=50

We highly recommend picking up a copy of Emmitt Barks Cartography’s Sedona Trails Map from either of our locations for the detail necessary to find these trails.

Propaganda:  You can’t get there from here.

You can’t get there from here…”

Those would be unfortunate words to describe trails access in Flagstaff. As evidenced by recent action on the part of the City Council, we need to be vigilant in expressing the importance of access to trails for our community.

Although we do enjoy an easily accessible and extensive trail system here, not all of that access is protected.

Absolute Bikes has been an avid supporter of Flagstaff Biking Organization in its efforts to preserve, promote and protect access to City, County and Forest Service trails.

We invite you to join us in our support by joining FBO as a paid member!

FBO not only supports trails in numerous ways, but they also organize and promote Flagstaff’s annual Bike to Work Week, help coordinate and staff Safe Kids Bike Rodeos and discounted helmet sales at area schools and much more on behalf of all cyclists in Northern Arizona.

Paid memberships help FBO to demonstrate the importance of cycling when talking to governments. Being able to represent that many citizens, tax payers and voters would spend their hard-earned money on membership in an advocacy effort draws the attention of politicians and government staff.

Please join or renew your membership with FBO now! Memberships start at only $20 per year…
