Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area closure order: The Coconino National Forest has enacted a closure order while contractors implement helicopter logging. The way that this order is written actually closes most of the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area for almost two years. We have been discussing this issue with the Coconino National Forest Supervisor and Flagstaff District Ranger, and hope to have more clarity on how this will actually pan out shortly. The implications so far are that this closure will be amended/reduced after the helicopter logging. Stay tuned for details. Ride of the Month: The White Line and other freeride lines in Sedona

In this day and age of social media, there are myriad videos floating around the internet of people pushing the limits of mountain biking. Sedona is one of the locations where these limits are pushed by some of the best riders in the world on a daily basis. We are huge fans of this!

That said, if you are coming to visit for the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival or another time, or if you live here in northern Arizona, we want to point out some considerations.

WARNING! PLEASE READ! We are not suggesting you go try to ride the White Line or any other off-route slick rock in the Sedona area without the appropriate skill set! NEVER ride beyond your abilities, regardless of the location. The folks riding this stuff have spent years building to the level where risk is minimized. Please use your own best judgement and take responsibility for your own decisions! If you wind up dead or severely injured in the bottom of a ravine, you are risking the safety of the first responders who will need to extract you as well. Please keep these bigger ramifications in mind when you ride.

Stay on rock and off of fragile soils and plants! It is virtually impossible to harm the rocks, but even a few errant tracks can lead to more tracks, eventually leaving an otherwise pristine area denuded and scarred. Please respect the area and leave it as you’ve found it.

Stay out of closed areas! Sedona has several surrounding Wilderness Areas and some other areas closed to bicycles in order to protect archaeological and wildlife resources. Please respect these important natural assets that belong to all of us.

Don’t be afraid to go back the way you came. If any of the above concerns present themselves, it may be better to turn around. This can also prevent you from getting lost. Some of the steeper places in an area like Sedona can leave you “lost” by being stuck on a ledge in plain view of your car.

Maybe find someone locally who can take you out to previously scouted locations. No one offers this service professionally, (including we at Absolute Bikes), so you’ll need to make the right friends.

Propaganda: We’re constantly training and learning to help serve you better.

Bike repair and sales are more technical than they’ve ever been.

Every year manufacturers are adding new technology and standards. We are selling and servicing ebikes, electronic shifting, various hydraulic systems, new and ever changing standards for hubs, headsets and bottom brackets, high-tech materials like carbon fiber and much more.

We are constantly working to stay apprised to all of this new info. Until recently we had to go to individual manufacturers for education and certification. It takes a lot of time and money to coordinate shop visits or send employees out to get training. We still attend manufacturer provided ongoing education, but we have also partnered with the Professional Bike Mechanic Association. PBMA is providing professional training workshops that bring a lot of manufacturers together in one place making it easier to acquire the training and certifications we need.  We recently sent our service managers to a multi-day, in-depth workshop where they completed 27 hours of training to receive certifications.

PBMA has also created the first 3rd party certification process for the cycling industry. Why is 3rd party certification important? Until now we have only had a multitude of second party certification. Second party certification is when a company or training provider creates its own verification program for candidate certification. Third-party certification verifies that a product, process or service meets defined, industry-independent criteria or standards as reviewed by an impartial party. PMBA requires mechanics to pass an online assessment before taking an in-person test. The practical test is focused on technique, torque, and precision. We currently have two mechanics, senior mechanic Sam Simmons and Service Manager Kyle McKendree, that have passed the in-person testing and are certified PBMA mechanics.

Additionally, Alexandra Martinez, one of our Flagstaff-based sales team, will be attending Quality Bicycle Products Women’s Bicycle Mechanic training, two weeks of classes under a scholarship, to expand her breadth of knowledge about the intricacies of the various component systems so she is better able to help you when you come in to shop for a new bike.

Jared Wesley, our Flagstaff based Retail Manager, will be attending Specialized Retul, (formerly “BG Fit”), fitting classes soon as well. With 6’8” Nate Cain moving to run the Sedona location, we need a fitter in Flagstaff and Jared has stepped up to train for that role.

We take our job as your bike shop seriously. Bikes aren’t as simple as they used to be, and we recognize that now more than ever you’ll need a shop that can help with your stuff no matter how technical it is. We are ready to help!
