IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED! Do you ride an e-bike? Do you support broadening opportunities to get people out of cars? Please write Flagstaff City Council and urge them to allow Class 1 and 2 e-bikes on all of the Flagstaff Urban Trail System. Please do so no later than this Monday! Counter to advice from City Staff, the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Transportation Commission, a City survey, an informal Facebook survey hosted by one of the Council members, and the input of multiple experts on cycling and e-bikes, the City Council has chosen to move forward with banning all e-bikes from all but the paved sections of the FUTS. Email them at email@example.com ASAP! Their first vote on this is on Tuesday. Also, please consider attending the City Council Meeting on this Tuesday, June 4th, 6:00pm and make your voice heard publicly, or at least show support in numbers for this amazing new mode of transportation!
ALSO FROM THE FLAGSTAFF CITY COUNCIL: BUI Law that would punish cycling under the influence with NOT LESS THAN 5 days in jail! As part of the above e-bike ordinance, the Council has also proposed to make bicycling (any bike…) under the influence of drugs or alcohol punishable with a fine and NOT LESS THAN five days in jail. Details about Council discussion at Item 7, 2:00:15. Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area closure order: The Coconino National Forest has enacted a closure order while contractors implement helicopter logging. The way that this order is written actually closes most of the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area for almost two years. We have been discussing this issue with the Coconino National Forest Supervisor and Flagstaff District Ranger, and hope to have more clarity on how this will actually pan out shortly. The implications so far are that this closure will be amended/reduced after the helicopter logging ends in early June. (Please stay out and help spread the word! The helicopters have been shut down at least 3 times because of people in the closure area. This will only delay reopening!) Stay tuned for details. The official order is here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd608944.pdf

Ride of the Month: E-Bike the FUTS Trails, (while you still can!)
In light of potential action by the misguided Flagstaff City Council, we are urging everyone to try out a leisurely e-bike ride on the Flagstaff Urban Trail System, while it is still legal.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to try an e-bike, we encourage you to come to either of our shops and try one out. A spin around the neighborhood is always free, and you can rent a demo bike for a refundable-towards-purchase fee for a longer ride.
The Flagstaff Urban Trail System is a great, low stress place to enjoy a bike ride of any sort because of the lack of vehicle traffic. If you are new to cycling, or new back to cycling, and e-bike can help you go farther with greater ease while still getting a workout.
Most people find that an e-bike feels just like riding a bicycle, but with greater ease on hills and into headwinds. The ability to amplify your input “exponentially” rather than “linearly”, (as on a regular bike), encourages more frequent rides over longer distances. All of this adds up to more fun!
There is really no better place for a casual ride than the FUTS, and an e-bike affords anyone a great way to enjoy this great resource!
Propaganda: The City of Flagstaff must embrace and encourage e-bikes now!
We were shocked and dismayed by the Flagstaff City Council’s response to the City Staff’s and committees’ and commissions’ recommendations for the e-bike ordinance for Flagstaff.
E-bikes are being readily accepted as a new mode of transportation throughout the world. Forward thinking nations and communities recognize that this mode is a godsend for reducing motor vehicle trips and minimizing both the physical and carbon footprint for transportation. E-bikes constitute 40% of bike sales in much of the European Union, and they are the fastest growing segment of bicycle sales in the United States.
The State of Arizona adopted model legislation, very similar to that proposed by People for Bikes, last year, and that legislation became law in January of 2019. This law basically states that Class 1 (up to 20 mph, pedal assist only), and Class 2 (up to 20 mph, pedal assist and/or throttle), are allowed on pathways, and Class 3, (up to 28 mph pedal assist only), are allowed in bike lanes. The State is unclear on e-bikes on sidewalks. The State law otherwise recognizes e-cyclists as having all the same rights and responsibilities as other cyclists.
All the Flagstaff City Council should be doing is clarifying whether or not e-bike should be allowed on sidewalks.
We don’t think that e-bikes should be allowed on sidewalks, (nor should regular bikes, except for maybe children), but we definitely support the use of e-bikes on the full extent of the FUTS trails!
Please take a few minutes to write the Flagstaff City Council and ask them to take a reasonable, fact and statistic driven approach to allowing e-bikes on the FUTS! Unwarranted fears about speed and conflict have no place in the laws of a community trying to reduce its impact on the environment!
Email the Council: firstname.lastname@example.org
Attend the Council meeting this Tuesday, June 4th, 6pm at City Hall.
