Ride of the Month: Lake Mary Road

Lake Mary Road is the staple of road riding in the Flagstaff area!

As the temperatures begin to warm but the trails are still muddy, this is a good time to ramp up your fitness for spring. The great thing about the Lake Mary Road/Mormon Lake area is that because there are no grueling climbs to speak of, you can set your own pace.

The wide shoulders and long line of site make for great opportunities to ride with your friends as well. Road rides are always better with some company to take turns pulling in the wind.

Speaking of wind, we recommend avoiding this ride on windier days. This out-and-back often seems to have a headwind in both directions.

Please be careful to stay to the right of the shoulder marking as vehicles travel at high speeds on this route.

Here is a map of this ride: http://goo.gl/maps/Tz2SZ

(This month’s “Ride of the Month” is in tribute to Everett Ramsay)

Propaganda: Don’t Ride Muddy Trails!

This winter has had a fairly decent amount of precipitation in both Flagstaff and Sedona. As a result, we have seen the trails in Sedona become pretty soft, and we’re bound to see the same in Flagstaff over the coming several weeks.

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind folks that riding your mountain bike on soft trails can cause damage and erosion that can take an entire season to recover. Although our observations have been that the occasional bike on a muddy section here and there doesn’t have the devastating impacts that it can in some places, it is still bad form as it will, at best, leave the trail tread bumpy for weeks and at worst, lead to rutting and the need for maintenance to prevent further erosion.

We also want to make sure folks know that we will occasionally suspend renting mountain bikes, especially in our Sedona location, because of trail conditions. We don’t do this because we don’t want our bikes to get dirty, we do it because we want don’t want to contribute to damaging the trails in the heavily used Sedona trail system. Last night we attended a presentation by a Red Rock Ranger District soils specialist who further elaborated on impacts that trail erosion can cause, including degradation of wildlife and watersheds.

So PLEASE, be patient! The trails will be as awesome as ever when they firm up a bit. In the meantime, consider going on a road ride!
