Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area closure order:
The Coconino National Forest has enacted a closure order while contractors implement helicopter logging. The way that this order is written actually closes most of the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area for almost two years. We have been discussing this issue with the Coconino National Forest Supervisor and Flagstaff District Ranger, and hope to have more clarity on how this will actually pan out shortly. The implications so far are that this closure will be amended/reduced after the helicopter logging. Stay tuned for details. The official order is here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd608944.pdf

Ride of the Month: Carroll Canyon area in Sedona

We’re featuring this area since it is the area most likely to be in good condition for the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival.

This network consists of some awesome short to medium length climbs and descents. Although the trails tend to be moderately difficult, there are some techy moves and tons of flow and speed to be had. Given its central location, the views of the surrounding cliffs are stunning!

Drive through West Sedona, turn left to descend Red Rock Loop Road past Red Rock High School. You’ll find a dirt pull-out on your right that is the access for Scorpion and Pyramid trails (you’ll be descending one of those…). From here, cross the road and ride a short distance on Chavez Ranch road. Turn left and climb on Old Post Trail.

Stay left on Old Post past Carroll Canyon Trail. At the top of your climb, you’ll turn left on Skywalker Trail. Traverse Skywalker to Red Rock Loop Road. Follow signage downhill to Herkenham. This trail is a classic old-school techy descent. Have fun!

At the bottom of Herkenham, turn left and climb on Old Post again. This time, turn right on to Carroll Canyon. After you crest the gnarly little climb, you’ll be treated to a couple of fun descents. Once you reach the bottom, keep your eyes peeled for a right hand turn onto Ridge Trail. You can stay on Ridge or bear left onto Sketch, they rejoin one another after a while. Sketch has better views. Have a snack and take in the sights!

You’ll continue downhill to connect with Chavez Ranch Road. Turn left and ride about ¼ mile to connect with the Secret Slickrock Trail on your right. Ride out to the Secret Slickrock and play around on a few lines. Continue from the southwest corner of the Slickrock on Ridge Trail to Red Rock Crossing Road.

Climb Red Rock Crossing Road, make a left on Chavez Ranch Road, and look for the right hand turn onto Rams Head Trail. Ride Rams Head to Old Post, and descend back to Chavez Ranch Road, turn right and pedal back to your car.

With the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival being a bit hobbled this year by recent snow, we wanted to share some thoughts with everyone in anticipation of the less than ideal, albeit still pretty awesome, weekend ahead.

First, we want to express a ton of gratitude to the folks running and working this event! We play a small part in the weekend, but it is really these folks who make it happen. If you are travelling here for a visit, please keep in mind the huge efforts put in by Mike and Matt and their crew, as well as the vendors and other exhibitors who are coming to Sedona to show you the goods.

We also want to thank the Sedona trails advocacy community and all of the volunteers who work to build and maintain trails. In particular, thanks to the Verde Valley Cyclists and the Red Rock Ranger District. These guys, (and some of our folks too), have been working to prep some riding opportunities and figure out where it will be best to ride in the less than ideal conditions as result of this past week’s snow storm.

This said, the festival is still totally on! There are going to be a bunch of trails open to ride! There are going to be scores of vendors with bikes and gear to check out, bands, food, beers and more! Check in with our Sedona location or the folks and maps at the festival for recommended routes and advice on areas to avoid.

Please keep in mind that this event is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, fund raiser for trail construction and maintenance for the mountain bike community in Sedona. The proceeds from this event help to make Sedona the awesome destination that it is. If you are registered for the event, thank you for helping to keep Sedona awesome.

Come over to Absolute Bikes Sedona Friday night for our big party and sale. We’ll have food and beverages and a DJ for everyone, and it is a great opportunity to get an unbeatable deal on some gear or a bike!

Also, join us Saturday. We’re going to be leading a ride from the Festival with Pivot Cycles sponsored rider, Aaron Chase, at 10:00am, and then getting all of our new riding buddies some pizzas.

Now, let’s SHRED THE RED!
