Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area closure order: The Coconino National Forest has enacted a closure order while contractors implement helicopter logging. The way that this order is written actually closes most of the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area for almost two years. We have been discussing this issue with the Coconino National Forest Supervisor and Flagstaff District Ranger, and hope to have more clarity on how this will actually pan out shortly. The implications so far are that this closure will be amended/reduced after the helicopter logging ends in late May. (Please stay out and help spread the word! The helicopters have been shut down at least 3 times because of people in the closure area. This will only delay reopening!) Stay tuned for details. The official order is here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd608944.pdf

Ride of the Month: Sam’s Fisher Point Special

This is a great shortish after-work type ride, or maybe a good first-go at a bit of challenge for a newer mountain biker.

Start at Lone Tree Road and the Sinclair Wash Urban Trail, just south of Butler. Head southeast on Sinclair Wash Trail. As you skirt the ponds at the water treatment plant, turn left. You’ll wind up returning here at the end of the ride.

After you bear right around the hillside, turn right to continue along the base of the hill. At the next intersection, you’ll stay left at a small tank. Turn left on the Flagstaff Loop Trail at the next intersection.

Follow the Flagstaff Loop Trail. It continues along an old road at one point and then bears right to climb steeply up a few switchbacks. After you crest this section, you’ll turn right onto a substantial dirt road, FR301. Ride on the dirt road for a little over a half mile. Where the road begins to turn left sharply, turn right onto an old 2-track that becomes a trail. In .2 miles, you’ll turn right onto the Arizona Trail. Take the opportunity to go out and back to the overlook on Fisher Point before undertaking the somewhat technical descent off the rim.

At the bottom of the descent, stay right a few times to head up the canyon. Shortly after crossing the intersection with the Flagstaff Loop Trail, turn right. If you wind up at Pine Canyon, you’ve made a wrong turn. Make the next left. After you descend the super steep hill, turn right and return back up Sinclair Wash Urban Trail.

This ride has some great scenery and is a good option to keep in mind until some of the Mount Elden Area reopens.

Check out the Emmitt Barks Cartography Flagstaff Trails Map, available at Absolute Bikes, for details on this and many other area rides.

Propaganda: It’s National Bike Month!

Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the League of American Bicyclists and many others, May is once again National Bike Month!

It speaks volumes about our culture that, in spite of the challenges and modern distractions, the bicycle and all of its benefits and joys is recognized nationally. We are especially proud that Flagstaff annually hosts Bike to Work and School Week and embraces the bicycle as part of our community.

If you check the top of this email, you’ll see that May is chock-full of bicycling related activities in addition to Bike to Work and School Week. There are several races, the Bike Olympics, trail work events and more. We are lucky to have and stoked to be a part of a town that supports bicycling to this degree.

Ride on out and join us! We’ll be hosting a Breakfast Stop on Bike to Breakfast Day, we’ll be building trails on National Trails Day, ride to work and enter to win raffle prizes during Bike to Work Week, take the kids to the Ice Cream Social, come join a clinic with Leslie at Absolute Bikes, Flagstaff to learn more about how your bike works, and so much more.

See the links and posts above, but you can always call us for more info on what’s going on in the cycling world in northern Arizona.
