Ride of the Month: Around the Peaks, the fun way!
It’s aspen season, and there is no better way to take in the beauty of these amazing trees than a ride around the San Francisco Peaks!
Our favorite way to do this on a mountain bike is counter-clockwise. Starting from Schultz Tank, head east on Schultz Pass Road, and then turn left up Waterline Road. This is a long gradual climb with a huge payout as you ride through the first of some of the best aspen groves accessible by bicycle in northern Arizona at the top. You’ll pass through a gate as you enter the aspens, after about a mile, you’ll be looking for a right hand turn onto the Inner Basin or “IB” Trail.
The Inner Basin Trail is a great descent, but please be prepared to encounter a lot of hikers along this route during this season. You’ll want to take in the amazing aspen groves along the way anyways.
You’ll enter Lockett Meadow as you finish up Inner Basin Trail. Bear around the dirt road loop in Lockett Meadow to the left, and descend Lockett Meadow Road. Please be aware of vehicle traffic as you descend during this busy time of year. Turn left at the bottom of Lockett Meadow Road, and then left again onto FR418.
You will follow FR418 for about 9 miles. Be looking for a left hand turn onto the Arizona National Scenic Trail. Once again, you will be gliding through another amazing grove of aspens as you gradually climb to the upper reaches of Hart Prairie. Follow the Arizona Trail for miles and miles, across Snowbowl Road, through Fort Valley and back to the Schultz Tank Trail Head.
This is an exceptionally long loop, and requires a mountain bike for the more technical trail sections, although there is a lot of dirt road incorporated into the loop. Plan on a long day even for very fit riders.
Propaganda: The Revenge of the Flagstaff Enduro was rad!
We want to thank the 120 or so folks who signed up, the 30 or more people who volunteered, our sponsors, Arizona Snowbowl, Specialized Bicycles, Nackard Pepsi, Total Rental, our beneficiaries Flagstaff Biking Organization’s Bike Park Fund and Flagstaff Family Food Center, and our vendors, Run Flagstaff, Fratelli Pizza and Bigfoot BBQ! Also, thank you to all the folks who use the trails who humored us for a few hours over the weekend.
An awesome time was had by all, and we collectively raised well over $9000 for the two charities! We are proud to have received high-praise from so many folks who attended, from seasoned enduro veterans to first-time enduro racers. We really hope to fill up this event next year to our limit of two hundred entrants.
We will be returning next year with the “Invasion of the Flagstaff Enduro”. Please watch your local social media feed for details and dates.
