Ride of the Month: New and Improved Rocky Moto
Rocky Moto is an oft overlook piece of the Flagstaff Trail System. Although it doesn’t rank among our best routes, it is worthy of a little exploration now and again. A couple of seasons ago the USFS and American Conservation Experience did some improvements which made this trail better, and this year’s Pedals v Pistons v Horseshoes v Hiking Boots event will again tune up some pieces and maintain some tread and drains, making it even better.
We recommend riding this trail east to west since it is primarily a descent that way. It can be incorporated with various loops. You can ride from the Fort Valley Trail Head, up Lower Moto, across Pipeline to the west about a ½ mile to the left hand at the intersection with Rocky Moto and Secret Trail. After descending about 150 yards from Pipeline, you’ll need to turn right around a huge boulder, not left on the more prominent user-created trail. You can also ride east to west on Secret Trail from the Schultz Pass area to make a bigger loop.
There is only one intersection along Rocky Moto’s length, a discreet right hand to GT Trail, (we don’t really recommend GT Trail…), before you reach the Arizona Trail. AZT is the best way to return towards the Mount Elden/Lower Moto Area.
If you like chunky, old-school technical riding, Rocky Moto is a great experience! We also know that there are usually some vast, untapped wild mushroom gathering opportunities this time of year, and acres of wild blackberry bushes in early August.
Add Rocky Moto to your quiver of mountain bike trail rides!
Propaganda: Tariffs will be affecting the price of bicycles!
Proposed and enacted tariffs on goods imported from overseas are directly affecting the prices we’ll all be seeing on bicycles.
For better or worse, most bicycles and bicycle components, like so many things in the USA, are manufactured in Asia. The current Administration is implementing new tariffs on various consumer goods. Bicycles are probably going to be affected, and the tariffs on ebikes are already in place.
Most of the ebikes we sell are not produced in China, so we have yet to see any price increases. Similarly, higher end mountain bikes tend to be produced in Taiwan, rather than mainland China, so we have escaped tariff-induced price increases on most of the bikes we sell so far.
That said, the dollar has been declining in value, which has raised prices on some 2019 models versus 2018 models already.
The futures is always uncertain, but all trends point towards bicycles becoming more expensive in the coming months.
That said, if you are considering purchasing a new bike, it’s probably better to buy sooner rather than later! We have a few closeouts on 2018s left, and 2019s are in stock already.
Come on by and let us know what your next dream ride is!
