Ride of the Month: Kick some Aspens!

We are just seeing the colors start to change on the higher mountains around Flagstaff and we are super excited to get out and hear the crunch and swoosh of leaves under our tires!

There are numerous options to enjoy the fall colors around Flagstaff. In this edition of Ride of the Month, we’re only going to note the highlights of several rides. Come by Absolute Bikes for a map and more details on any of these.

  • Waterline Road-This is the best route to take new and less technically oriented riders to enjoy the trees. It’s a long, low-grade steady climb out and an easy cruise back. For a longer ride, continue into the Inner Basin or out to the top of Abineau Trail, (Abineau is closed to bikes, so return the same way).
  • Inner Basin Trail-This is a great option for some steep single-track. It can be used with Waterline Road, some old two-tracks and the far side of Schultz Pass Road to make a loop. Please be aware that the single track section will have lots of hikers, so be polite.
  • Arizona Trail from FR418 to Aspen Nature Loop-This is the best all-around mountain bike ride in some of the best aspen groves. This can be done as a lollipop loop with the Aspen Nature Loop, and you can do a short out and back to the Humphries Trail Head to check out this recently aligned section of trail. Use a shuttle from town and ride all the way back to Fort Valley.
  • Secret Trail, Weatherford Trail and Schultz Creek Trail- Use the Arizona Trail to make a loop with these. Recently completed Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project fuels reduction left the aspens along Schultz Creek much more prominent, and Secret and Weatherford have lots of mixed conifer and aspen stands along them.
  • Snowbowl Road- An awesome road ride with tons of aspens along its shoulders. Make a quick stop at Aspen Corner, Flagstaff’s most famous aspen grove.
  • Around the Peaks gravel ride- Use Fort Valley Road/Highway 180 to connect Hart Prairie, (FR151), FR418 and FR420 for an all-day backcountry gravel adventure that highlights riding through beautiful aspen stands and distant views of aspen groves.

Check out Emmitt Barks Cartography’s Flagstaff Trails Map, Google Maps, and come by for details on these and other routes!

Propaganda: Thanks for another successful Flagstaff Enduro!

We want to thank everyone for another successful Flagstaff Enduro! We are still tallying some expenses and receipts, but we should be finalizing approximately $7000 in donations to each of the two event beneficiaries, the Flagstaff Biking Organization Trail Fund and the Flagstaff Family Food Center.

First we would like to acknowledge our sponsors.

Arizona Snowbowl has generously been our title sponsor for all three years. Their financial contribution roughly equally provides the expert cash purse and a substantial donation to the charities.

Specialized Bicycles provides our grand raffle prize of a $1000 Specialized Spending Spree.

Nackard Pepsi provides free beverages for each day’s lunch.

Fratelli Pizza and Run Flagstaff each help us with special rates for lunch and timing.

Jeff with Blue Wolf Events and Gail Hughes both volunteer their logistical expertise. Thanks to the Flagstaff Ranger District for help with the permitting.

We are very grateful to the members of Team Absolute Bikes and Red Rock Racing, the NAU Key Club, volunteers for the Flagstaff Family Food Center and so many other folks who donate their time to this event. There are too many individuals to name, but suffice it to say that with 7 stages over 40+ miles of trail, there is a lot of course marking, timing, preparation and take down to do!

Thanks as well to the huge list of product podium and raffle prize donors! We appreciate all of the support of our vendors who help us make this event awesome.

Would also like to thank the Flagstaff community for sharing the trails with our events over the years, and for supporting our business with your patronage! Without you we can’t keep doing the things we do.

Thanks for your patience and business!
