Ride of the Month: Campbell Mesa/Flagstaff Loop Trail/Walnut Canyon Rim Loop
This ride is one of our current favorites. It is great ridden either way and can be shortened with a couple of “short cut” options.
Start at the Campbell Mesa trail head. Ride to the trails on the closed to the public road and turn right onto the Walnut Meadows Loop. Stay right at the first intersection, and note the Flagstaff Loop Trail bearing right shortly thereafter, which descends to Old Walnut Canyon Road. You’ll be returning here.
Continue on the Walnut Meadows Loop to the right turn to the AZ Trail Connector, turn right. Cross Old Walnut Canyon Road and continue to the AZ Trail, where you’ll turn left.
Ride the AZ Trail for several miles in and out of a side canyon to Walnut Canyon, and along the rim of the Canyon. Consider venturing out to one of the overlooks, the views are worth the extra mile or two.
As you descend from Fisher Point, your first bail-out short cut will be on your right. Turn right when you reach the “T”-intersection of two roads and follow the Loop Trail signs back to Campbell Mesa.
After descending from Fisher Point, you’ll turn right two times to head towards Flagstaff on the Fisher Point Trail.
The second bail-out short cut will be to follow the Fisher Point Trail to the top of a short climb and turn right on the Flagstaff Loop Trail to follow this back to Campbell Mesa.
For the long version, make the second left to Skunk Canyon. After the “narrows” in Skunk Canyon, you’ll climb past a couple of old tanks. Look for a discreet “exit” to the right to intersect the Flagstaff Loop Trail climb out of the canyon. Follow the signs for Flagstaff Loop Trail back to Campbell mesa.
The last piece of Flagstaff Loop Trail tying into FS 301D road, close to Campbell Mesa, has not yet been completed, but it is flagged, so you can follow the flag line to the 301D Road, or travel cross country for 100 yards or so to your left to intersect the road sooner. This section of trail should be finished this summer. Join the Flagstaff Biking Organization trail day on May 11th to help this along!

Propaganda: Keep on riding!
The summer of 2019 has been tough on riders in Northern Arizona.
We started off the Flagstaff season with a fuels reduction project closure of indeterminate length on our favorite trails. Shortly after the trails reopened, the devastating Museum Fire reclosed much of that area and more, (thanks to all of the firefighters and the US Forest Service for minimizing the impact of that!)
Lake Mary Road was immersed in smoke for a few days, and Snowbowl Road has had construction going on, limiting its appeal as a road ride.
Although much of the closure footprint for the Museum Fire has reopened, much is still closed and will probably remain so until next spring, at best. The USFS has to do work to mitigate falling tree hazards and stabilize some slopes before they can safely allow the public back in.
As I write, it has been raining hard on the burn, and we’re hoping the trails and Elden Lookout Road will hold up. We’re also hoping that the residents downstream from the fire scar will be safe and not lose their homes and property.
All of this adversity has not kept Flagstaff folks, and our visitors, from getting out on their bikes! We’ve been checking out discussion forums and seeing positive stuff. We are greatful that folks are concerned about our forests and trails, but that they’re still getting out on the open trails and having a great time. Absolute Bikes has been as busy as ever, (know any bike mechanics looking for a job? Let us know…). Thank you for continuing to come in and support our business!
It’s important to keep doing the things you love even if life throws adversity your way. Lemons and lemonade, sunny side up.
Keep on riding, northern Arizona! We’ll see you on the roads and trails.
Thank you for your business and please let us know how we can help keep you riding.
